This statue hails from Cameroon and was carved by the talented artists of the Ambete, Embete or Mbete Tribe.
The Ambete live on the frontier with Gabon and the Republic of Congo of the the Kota population. They carved three types of sculpture: heads, busts and full figures. The statues have short legs, an elongated columnar torso and a flattened face with a triangular chin.
The faces of the Mbete statues show a prominent forehead overhanging a hollow receding face with a rectangular mouth and broadly carved features, so that the original tree-trunk form is still visible. The shoulders are thrown forward, the arms slightly bent. Frequently, the hairdo, composed of horizontal loops, is parted by a central crest.
They are thought to have a connection with the ancestor’s cult – they were either used as reliquaries or placed alongside ancestor bones in a basket.
This particular statue is believed to be from the early 20th century.
Small cracks, discoloration, etc are a normal part of the ageing process and add to the character of each item.
